First Impressions

Walking up to Bank St Royal Mile, you immediately get that “this is exactly where I want to be” feeling. The four-star hotel sits right on one of Edinburgh’s most famous streets, and I mean right on it — you’re literally steps from the castle and all the Royal Mile action. The building itself has that classic Edinburgh stone facade that photographs beautifully, but what really struck me was how it manages to feel both historic and welcoming at the same time.

Location & Neighborhood

Honestly, the location is pretty much perfect if you want to be in the thick of things. You’re on Bank Street in Old Town, which means Edinburgh Castle is practically your neighbor — I could see it from my window, actually. The Royal Mile stretches right outside your door, so all those little closes and wynds that make Edinburgh so atmospheric are yours to explore. What I really appreciated was being able to walk to Princes Street in about five minutes, but also having Grassmarket just down the hill when you want somewhere a bit more lively for dinner.

The Room Experience

The rooms at Bank St Royal Mile strike that nice balance between comfort and character. Mine wasn’t huge — this is Old Town Edinburgh, after all — but it was thoughtfully designed with everything you actually need. The bed was genuinely comfortable (you know how hit-or-miss hotel beds can be), and I loved the little touches like proper Scottish shortbread and decent coffee facilities. The bathroom was compact but well-appointed, and the shower had excellent pressure, which honestly made my day after all that walking around the cobblestones.

What makes staying here special is how effortlessly you can dive into Edinburgh’s best bits. I’d step out in the morning and within minutes be wandering through the Lawnmarket or popping into St. Giles’ Cathedral. The location means you’re perfectly positioned for both the obvious tourist spots and the more hidden gems — like that little coffee shop tucked away in Advocate’s Close that I probably wouldn’t have found if I’d been staying somewhere else. Evening walks down to the Grassmarket for dinner became a lovely routine, and getting back up the hill wasn’t nearly as daunting as I’d expected.

The high rating really makes sense once you’ve stayed here. It’s that combination of being exactly where you want to be without feeling like you’re in a tourist trap. The staff genuinely seem to know their city well — they gave me directions to places that weren’t just the obvious recommendations. I can see why couples rate it so highly; there’s something romantic about stepping out your door onto those ancient cobblestones, especially in the evening when the Royal Mile takes on that magical, slightly mysterious atmosphere that Edinburgh does so well. You’re not just staying in Edinburgh — you’re staying in the heart of what makes the city special.
